Update Exchange 2013 Attribute after ILM or MIIS GAL synchronization

The objective of GAL synchronization is to import the information about Users mailboxes from the source company, and then exporting all information to target company as Mail-Enabled Contacts in their Active Directory

There are multiple product used for GAL Sync across forest – MIIS 2003 – ILM 2007 – ILM 2007 FP1 – FIM 2010 – FIM 2010 R2 SP1

FIM 2010 R2 SP1 is the latest product which supports Exchange Server 2013. To understand more detail on new features of FIM 2010 R2 SP1 – http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj863246(v=ws.10).aspx

Incase organization still holds MIIS 2003 they may face issue on GAL sync

The MIIS 2003 uses the legacyExchangeDN with the help of Exchange recipient update service to stamp the mail-Enabled contacts. From Exchange 2007 there is no more RUS hence the alternate solution is to install 32-Bit Exchange 2007 management console in MIIS 2003 server

What is legacyExchangeDN ?

LegacyExchangeDN is the X.500 address format described for the user mailbox. You can check them using the below powershell command

C:>Get-Mailbox RajiS | fl LegacyExchangeDN

LegacyExchangeDN : /o=Mail/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)/cn=Recipients/cn=rajis

Then Exchange 2010 launched where we don’t have 32 bit version. Hence in order to overcome this we need to run the following PowerShell command to populate the LegacyExchangeDN attribute for the Mail-Enabled Contacts:

  • Get-MailContact | Set-MailContact
  • Get-Recipient | Update-Recipient

To add the X.500 address using the powershell command

C:\>$ProxyAddresses = (Get-Mailbox Rajis).EmailAddresses

C:\>$ProxyAddresses += [Microsoft.Exchange.Data.CustomProxyAddress](“X500:/o=IT/ou=mail/cn=Recipients/cn=Rajis”)

C:\>Set-Mailbox juser -EmailAddresses $ProxyAddresses

Now we have Exchange 2013 – The below command will be used when you want to update specific object exchange attribute in the address list instead of complete address list

Update-Recipient -Identity “Raji Subramanian”

Get-MailContact -OrganizationalUnit “IT/mail.com Users” | Update-Recipient

The difference between on the above two commands is set-MailContact updates the msExchRecipientDisplayType attribute, where Update-Recipient doesn’t.  But both populate legacyExchangeDN and ShowInAddressBook. To run the Get-MailContact cmdlet, the account must have Exchange View-Only Administrator role

When IFM released it support Exchange Server 2007 but to support Exchange 2010 you need to install hotfix for IFM.Before installing hotfix in IFM
